Mackenzie Thomas: Performing Online and on Stage
On her sold-out show "I Said What I Said", vulnerability online and the social media as memoir
My guest this week is artist, writer and performer Mackenzie Thomas.
Fresh off her two-show sold out run in New York, we talk about her 4-hour durational performance "I Said What I Said" and explore how growing up online shaped her work, the impact of Rilo Kiley and Jenny Lewis and the re-appropriation of the term E-Girl.
The conversation broaches the topics of the vulnerability of online performance, the consequences of radical honesty and how audience may shape the work even when the work is highly personal.
The whole interview is punctuated with beautiful moments where Mackenzie relates her work to her upbringing but also to how she spent time online. From discovering Jenny Lewis, to encountering the work of @molly__soda on Tumblr, to countless hours on YouTube, the internet was and remains a driving source of inspiration.
“I Said What I Said” is premiering in Los Angeles on January 14th. It is however sold out.
